Most conversations about technical debt end the same way. Someone presents the cost (Accenture puts it at $2.41 trillion annually for U.S. enterprises) and then the proposed solution is some version of "we need to modernize." Which usually means a multi-year, multi-million dollar rebuild that the business can't fully fund, the team doesn't have bandwidth for, and that carries more risk than anyone wants to admit out loud.

Moving Prior Authorization Toward Real-Time, Data-Driven Decisions

Health plans have reduced prior authorizations by 11%, removing an estimated 6.5 million requests from the system.

That’s real progress.

For something that has been a consistent source of frustration for patients, providers, and payers, even incremental change matters. Fewer requests means fewer delays, less administrative work, and a step toward a better experience.

But the more interesting story isn’t the reduction itself. It’s what that reduction sets in motion.

Prior authorization isn’t just getting smaller. It’s changing.

The ROI of AI in Healthcare: What the Numbers Actually Show

Every healthcare executive has heard the AI pitch. Every budget cycle, the presentations get more polished, the ROI claims more ambitious, and the urgency more insistent. But healthcare leaders are right to be skeptical. Margins are thin. Regulatory exposure is real. And the industry has a long memory for expensive technology initiatives that overpromised and underdelivered.

So here is the grounded question: Does AI in healthcare actually pay off?

The answer, increasingly, is yes — but not uniformly, and not without intention. The data is compelling. The pattern separating high-ROI organizations from everyone else is clear. And for leaders who understand both, the opportunity is significant.

The answer, increasingly, is yes — but not uniformly, and not without intention. The data is compelling. The pattern separating high-ROI organizations from everyone else is clear. And for leaders who understand both, the opportunity is significant.

HIMSS 2026 Recap: AI Gets Real in Healthcare

HIMSS 2026 felt different.

Not because there was more AI. There was plenty of that.

But because the conversation shifted.

This year wasn’t about whether healthcare should use AI. That debate is over. The real question now is where AI is actually working, what it’s worth, and how to scale it without creating new problems.

Across keynotes, panels, and conversations on the floor, a few themes came through clearly:

AI is moving from pilots to enterprise rollout

The market is splitting by maturity

ROI is now expected, not optional

Governance is becoming core infrastructure

And there’s a deeper shift starting to emerge around responsibility and ethics

This post is a recap of what actually mattered from HIMSS 2026, and what it means for the work ahead.

Two AI Operating Models for Prior Authorization. One Foundation for Both.

AI in prior authorization is often framed as a tradeoff.

Either improve the experience for nurses and reviewers, or automate the process end-to-end.

In reality, both approaches are valid.

AI can assist teams within existing workflows and orchestrate decisions across them. Both introduce real intelligence. Both reduce administrative burden.

What determines success isn’t which path an organization chooses.

It’s whether both are built on the same underlying foundation.

Assist vs Orchestrate: How AI Actually Evolves in Healthcare Operations

AI adoption in healthcare is often framed as a binary choice. Either AI supports people, or it replaces them. Either workflows are automated, or they’re manual.

That framing misses how AI actually evolves in real operations.

In practice, AI adoption is a progression. One that starts with assistance and, over time, moves toward orchestration.

Both stages matter. Both deliver value. And neither works in isolation.
